As reporters are more frequently called upon to report on immigration issues in a post-9/11 world, bringing journalists together with the experts who can provide them with valuable information and larger context has become essential.
In response, The Century Foundation convened a series of regional seminars for journalists throughout 2004-2005. The four sessions, which have now been
completed, were held in: Newark (September 30-October 1); Atlanta (December 2-3);
Los Angeles (February 3-4); and Chicago (April 7-8).
Featuring prominent experts offering both national and regional perspectives,
each session included segments on the basics of immigration law, trends in immigrant
demographics, immigrants and the economy, comprehensive immigration reform options,
immigrants and civil liberties, and border and homeland security issues. The last
segment of each seminar was devoted to a roundtable discussion among the journalists
to share their experiences about the challenges they have encountered in covering
immigration issues.
